Mondays in August the Mahane Yehuda Market in Jerusalem is the place to be. The colorful atmosphere of the market becomes a street celebration with music, puppets, arts & crafts, games and of course – food!
Market Olympics, a chess tournament and vegetable sculpting are just part of the unusual happenings that can be found at ‘Balabasta’, a joint project of the Mahane Yehuda Market Association and the Jerusalem Season of Culture. To make time to enjoy the fun, the market will remain open until 23:00 on Mondays. There’s even a special tour for children, led by Aya Schein every Monday at 17:30 and 18:30. Children aged 3 – 12 will meet the sellers and become acquainted with their wares while fulfilling the challenges posed by Aya. Registration is required: ayaschein@gmail.com.
Last Monday, the International Festival of Puppet Theatre held a parade of giant puppets, created from recycled market materials. Led by Adam Yachin, the puppets were created in neighborhood workshops and volunteers manipulated the puppets through the admiring crowds. Tomorrow, according to the Balabasta facebook page, we can look forward to hearing Reggaestan in the market:
