Winter rains are ushering in Tu Bishvat, the new year of the trees. This year, the Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Rosh Pina and Sderot cinematheques will mark the holiday with “Films from the Blue Box” – screenings of archival films documenting and celebrating 110 years to the Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael).
Yaakov Gross has curated a program of JNF films from the Spielberg Jewish Film the Archive in Jerusalem and the Axelrod Collection of the Israel Film Archive at the Jerusalem Cinematheque. Among the films to be screened: Tu Bishvat celebrations in Jerusalem in 1920; celebrations in Tel Aviv, Haifa and other communities in the 1930s; settlements in Kiryat Anavim in 1920, Emek Israel in 1923, Emek Hefer and Emek Zvuloon in the 1930s. A nostalgic look at building tower and stockade settlements (Homa UMigdal), drying swamps and the establishment of Israeli institutions such as Bezalel, the Technion, and the Hebrew University.
