McCoy Tyner’s musical history takes us back into the prolific jazz scene in the early
1950s, when at only 17 he began playing alongside monumental jazz identities such
as Miles Davis and John Coltrane. His name synonymous with the groundbreakers of
the genre, Tyner has moved gracefully through different eras of the jazz narrative
with his esoteric piano style and unparalleled chord sophistication. A frequenter at
the Grammies since the ‘70s, Tyner’s own record label under his name has so far
launched some of the finest modern jazz around – personally chosen by the one and
only surviving member of the John Coltrane Quartet.
Since Coltrane’s death, Tyner has released nearly 80 albums, earned four Grammys
and in 2002 was awarded the prestigious title of Jazz Master from the National
Endowment of the Arts. His record label has produced renowned jazz names such as
Ron Carter, Bill Frisnell, John Scofield and Bela Fleck, as well as albums of his own
solo piano performances. Tyner’s music is renowned for his incorporation of
culturally diverse musical elements and recognition of the ever‐changing genre of
jazz, evident in his maintained status as one of the world’s biggest names in the jazz
industry.
