There is endless fascination in the West for everything that emerges from China, which kept apart from the western world for so long. This month, the Tel Aviv Dance Festival brings the Beijing Modern Dance Company (BMDC) to Tel Aviv and Haifa for 4 performances, from October 22 – 24th. Founded in 1995 by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture, the Company became independent in 1998, and is the leading professional modern dance company in China. BMDC has received national and international acclaim for its diverse repertoire that integrates the culture of China with influences from abroad.

Two works will be performed by the company. The first is Unfettered Journey, choreographed by Hu Lei: In the Northern Ocean there is a fish called the K’un, countless thousands of li in size. This k’un changes into a bird, call the p’3eng. Its back is countless of li in breadth. When it is moved, it flies, its wings obscuring the sky like clouds.

The second is Oath (Midnight Rain) by Gao Yanjinzi, which explores the choreographer’s understanding of Buddhist Samsara, the cycle of death and rebirth and the liminal moment between night and day, between black and white, between ending and beginning.

For all those intrigued by the company, Suzanne Dellal is also offering an open talk on Friday, October 23 at 12:00.
