Doc Challenge – the great documentary film challenge returns! The international film project will take place in Israel for the 4th time, inviting filmmakers to compete in making a short (4 – 7 min) documentary on a given subject within 5 days.
This year’s theme: Foreign Body
The competition will launch on April 29, 2012, and is open to filmmakers who have made at least one short or full length documentary or feature film. Students in their final year of film and/or television studies at an accredited institution are also eligible to compete. Hurry & sign up on the Doc Challenge site www.docchallenge.co.il – registration ends on April 10th!
The 12 – 15 filmmakers chosen to set out on this adventure will put their team together and receive all the means of production needed to create a film. All teams work on their films in parallel and submit them on the appointed day and time. New this year: all films will be produced in high definition (HD).
On the day of the launch, the teams will be given a “secret” topic and documentary genre (biography, music, investigative) that will give direction to their film. The completed films will have a festive premiere screening on the waterfront of the Port of Tel Aviv as part of the Docaviv Festival, on May 10, 2012, in addition to special cinematheque screenings. In addition to prizes for the competition winners, the films will be broadcast on Channels 2 and 10, and the Israeli and U.S. Doc Challenge websites.
This year’s jury members are:
Doron Solomons – video artist, film editor and art teacher. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in Israel and internationally.
Yoav Shamir – award-winning documentary director, producer and cinematographer. His films include: “Checkpoint,” “Flipping Out,” and “Defamation.”
Dvorit Shargal – a blogger focusing on media critique (Velvet Underground) and former film critic. One of the filmmaking team of “Down Under Tel Aviv” (Doc Challenge 2009).
In addition to Docaviv, Doc Challenge is produced in cooperation with the Rabinovich Fund Cinema Project, The Second Authority for Television and Radio, Gesher Multicultural Film Fund, and sponsored by the Otzar Mifalei Yam Hamelach Company, and the Port of Tel Aviv.
