A new production of The Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler’s ground-breaking play, will be presented at the at the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center. The all volunteer production, a collaborative effort of 16 women, will support the Jerusalem Rape Crisis Center, with all proceeds donated to the center. The performances will be in English.
First performed in 1996, bringing women’s experiences to the stage in unabashed, witty, funny, intimate and moving monologues, The Vagina Monologues explores subjects such as masturbation, menstruation, rape, female genital mutilation, birth, orgasm, and the vagina itself, that even today, seventeen years later, rarely find their way into public discourse or mainstream art.
Kate Brody Nachman, who volunteered her time to direct the play together with Rachel F. Wanetik, said in a press release: “I am a fan of theatre for the purpose of entertainment, but I am inspired by theatre with a greater purpose. Working on The Vagina Monologues is a special experience because we aren’t just giving women an opportunity to be actors, we’re giving them an opportunity to be activists. We are inviting an audience not just to come out and laugh and learn with us, but to be part of the solution just by buying a ticket and showing up”.
The Jerusalem Rape Crisis Center in Memory of Co-Founding Member Linda Feldman has recently celebrated 30 years since its establishment, with over 180 volunteers working to promote social equality and the prevention of violence against women. The rape crisis center runs a 24/7 hour hotline (1202), accompanies survivors to hospitals, police stations and through their legal process, as well as facilitating unique educational and promotional activities for youth, professionals and local institutions.
