The A-Genre Festival at Tmuna Theatre will take a look at “The Mainstream.” Now in its 11th edition, the festival of experimental theatre will take place from March 7 – 9, 2013, with 30 performers from diverse artistic disciplines.
Tmuna Theatre describes their choice of theme:
The relationship between mainstream and fringe has always existed – in the culture, art and society. The two define one another: the margins enclose the mainstream, and exist in relationship to it. Tmuna Theatre was founded in order to offer an alternative to the mainstream in theatre and the performing arts. The A-Genre festival was founded (in 2005) to provide an alternative to the theatre itself and create a new stage language. This year we decided to dedicate the festival to a renewed examination of the tension that exists between the alternative and the mainstream in art, culture and community.
Can we examine fringe as mainstream, and not relate to ourselves as an alternative? What questions may emerge from this reversal?
When the individual (or independent creative artist in this case) is at the center, how is he or she influenced by the mainstream? Can a person still be an individual? Is individuality courage or compromise? Can the fringes infiltrate the mainstream, or is their content dependent on remaining marginal?
In the A-Genre tradition, the festival will take place throughout the different spaces in the venue, from the conventional stages to the corridors and backstage area.
