Rothschild Miscellany, a rare Hebrew illuminated 15th century manuscript from the collection of the Israel Museum, has been included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register for 2013. The Rothschild Miscellany and Yad Vashem’s Pages of Testimony collection are the first nominations from Israel to be accepted to the register.
The Memory of the World Register aims to document the world’s cultural heritage, making it accessible to all. The Rothschild Miscellany, commissioned in with its miniature drawings and border decorations ornamented in gold and silver leaf, details the customs of Italian Jewish life in the Renaissance.
“It is a great honor for us that our Rothschild Miscellany has been included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register,” said James Snyder, Anne and Jerome Director of the Israel Museum. “It is perhaps the finest Hebrew illuminated manuscript from the 15th century and one of our collection’s rarest treasures.”
