The Eifman Ballet will return to Israel with two works: Rodin and Anna Karenina.
Rodin, a new ballet inspired by the life and tragic relationship between sculptor Auguste Rodin and his apprentice, muse and lover Camille Claudell, will be performed at the Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center from July 10, 2013.
Anna Karenina, based on Tolstoy’s novel and fascinating heroine, will be performed at the Herzliya Performing Arts Center from July 6, 2013.
Choreographer Boris Eifman is known for his epic, theatrical ballets, driven by psychological and emotionally dramatic themes. Often inspired by literary works, his previous ballets include The Seagull, Tchaikovsky, Don Juan and a Russian version of Hamlet.
In his latest work, Rodin, Eifman looks at the turbulent relationship between Rodin and Claudell. The passionate affair between the two sculptors lasted for many years, yet soon following their breakup, Claudell did not fare well. She destroyed many of her own sculptures, only about 90 statues, sketches and drawings survive. Ultimately, she spent her final years in a psychiatric facility. History has taken up her tale from a feminist perspective, her biography and relationship with Rodin have been the subject of several books and two films: Camille Claudell (1988), based on Reine Marie’s biography, directed by Bruno Nuytten, with Isabelle Adjani co-producing and starring; and Camille Claudel 1915, directed by Bruno Dumont and starring Juliette Binoche, which was shown in competition at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival in February 2013. The Eifman Ballet site describes this new work as: “a massive artistic utterance about the tragic nature of the lives of geniuses.”
