The Israel Chamber Orchestra’s Amadeus Festival will continue this week, Wednesday November 6 and Thursday November 7, with two more piano concerti (No. 16 and No. 19) and Symphony No. 34. Come early and enjoy a pre-performance lecture by musicologist Anat Sharon (free of charge for ticketholders).

The star and guest performer of this concert will be British-born pianist and conductor Ian Fountain. Tel Aviv has been an important city in Fountain’s career ever since he won the Arthur Rubinstein concert here in 1989, aged only 19. He often gives performances in Israel, in addition to his thriving international career. (He’ll be giving a solo recital at the Israel Conservatory on Friday, November 8).

Symphony No. 34 in C major (K. 338) is missing the minuet movement usually included in symphonies. While the emergent style of composing had symphonies written in four movements, this one only features three, in the style of the older tradition. Mozart had a minuet movement written, but tore it from the manuscript, for unknown reasons. The symphony follows a fanfare-like theme, reminiscent of some of Mozart’s opera overtures and typical of the Austrian style of composing in C major.

1784 found Mozart busy at the piano, both as a composer and as a performer. Within that year he wrote no less than six piano concerti. The two that will be performed this week are Piano Concerto No. 16 and Piano Concerto No. 19, and both were written for Mozart to perform himself. No. 19, written in F major, is known as the second Coronation Concerto (along with Concerto No. 26), since Mozart chose it for his performance at the coronation of Leopold II in 1790.

The Amadeus Festival will continue with two more Mozart-centric concerts. Take a look at the full program on the Israel Chamber Orchestra’s webpage.

The concert will take place at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, November 6 and November 7 at 20:30. An introductory lecture by Anat Sharon will begin at 19:30 in the concert hall.
