The Antonio Marquez Dance Company returns to Israel for a series of performances beginning tonight at the Herzliya Center for the Performing Arts. This is the world renowned company’s third visit to Israel, says Marquez, “The Israeli audiences embraced us with warmth and we would like to return that embrace.” In addition to Herzliya, the company will perform in Haifa, Rishon LeZion, and Jerusalem.
Marquez, formerly a star dancer in the National Ballet of Spain who founded the company in 1995, emphasizes preserving the flamenco tradition while keeping it alive and vital, “I try to take the tradition and make it contemporary and relevant.” Marquez draws on his own experience of immersion in Spanish culture, combined with classical ballet training, to create the company’s works. The program will include “Fiesta Celebration” created specifically for this tour, and a dance set to Ravel’s “Bolero.”
The flamenco – contemporary dance crossover audience will have a chance to see two interpretations of Ravel’s Bolero this month as the work will be part of the program for The Antonio Marquez Dance Company as well as Project 5 of Ohad Naharin – certainly a reason to celebrate!
