The New Israeli Vocal Ensemble and the Israeli Andalusian Orchestra will fly “On Wings of Song” with performances from February 25 – March 4, 2014 in Modi’in, Raanana and Tel Aviv.
A happy meeting between the Andalusian musical tradition and the Western classical vocal music, the concert will feature vocal and instrumental music from Spain, North Africa, and Ladino songs. Middle Eastern motifs have often found their way into the works of the Israeli composers like Paul Ben-Haim and Yehezkel Braun in their search for new Israeli modes of musical expression. Andalusian music, which originated in Spain during the Islamic era, became an integral part of the Jewish liturgical tradition, adopted by Jewish composers of Piyyut and other religious works.
The concert will feature authentic Middle Eastern instruments as the New Israeli Vocal Ensemble performs with a Paytan and the Andalusian Orchestra, merging East and West in Ladino songs, songs of Matityahu Shalem, Nahum Nardi and Mordechai Zeira, and traditional Andalusian Piyyut.
