Shakespeare Jerusalem is no fool when it comes to Shakespeare – the young, talented company makes the stage come alive with all the wit, humor and verbal acrobatics of Shakespeare in his own words. “Fooling with Shakespeare,” an evening of monologues exploring the role of the fool will be performed in Ra’anana on January 25th and Jerusalem on January 26th. The company performs in English, but appeals to a general audience of non-native English speakers as well: full-length plays are presented with superscripts in Hebrew and thematic evenings are offered in two versions: one which is all in English and the other with transitional and explanatory scenes in Hebrew.
The company, founded by artistic director Shannon Kisch, presented a full-length production of Henry V in November 2008, and initiated the Jerusalem version of Shakespeare in the park this past June with “Midsummer Night’s Show,” a series of love scenes from the plays. Having plumbed the depths of love, Kisch, who is on intimate terms with the Bard, turns to the fool for inspiration. The freedom, wit and humor of Shakespeare’s fools are an endless source of pleasure, brilliant, bold and often bawdy. Herzl Tobey, who played a range of lovers – shy, scheming, and sweet – so eloquently in the summer show, will be playing the fool next week in Ra’anana and Jerusalem, with monologues from some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, including “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “Twelfth Night”, “As You Like It” and “Two Gentlemen of Verona”.
Come see Shakespeare Jerusalem play the fool – you’d be a fool to miss this performance!
