We protect, adorn, and equip our bodies; we hide, paint, photograph and write and about them ad infinitum – we are obsessed. Why? In part at least, it’s the old mind-body problem – because we are and are not our bodies. It is only through our body that we experience the world and our body is the medium through which the world encounters and responds to us.
Olivier Dubois’ Tragédie, which premiered at the 2012 Avignon Festival, is a work of and about the body, performed in the nude by nine female and nine male dancers. Dubois seeks to explore the dilemma through movement, as the dancers repeat the choreographic phrases in an intimate examination of the human condition, moving towards, if not a conclusion, then at least a different way of viewing the issue. Primal, tribal and philosophical, the work has aroused considerable interest and controversy, and will be performed in Israel at the Israeli Opera – Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center from September 17 – 20, 2014.
Dubois is the director of the Le Centre chorégraphique national Roubaix – Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Born in 1972, Olivier Dubois began dancing at the age of 23, and has worked with choreographers Karine Saporta, Angelin Preljocaj, Jan Fabre and Sasha Waltz, as well as Cirque du Soleil. Dubois founded his dance company in 2007, and was chosen as one of the top 25 dancers in the world by Dance Europe magazine in 2011. Tragédie is the third work in a triptych, dedicated to the subject of resistance, and abolishing barriers.
