Ohad Naharin’s Mamootot, which originally premiered in 2003, is now to be performed for the first time by the Batsheva Ensemble – The Young Company. An intimate, intense, work, it is performed in the studio, with the audience sitting on the perimeter, around all four sides of the room. The performance takes place in the center, the proximity of the dancers, and the exposure – not only of the dancers, but of the audience members to one another (there is full light in the room), heightens one’s awareness of the act of looking, raising questions of connection, communication, and voyeurism. The dancers are extraordinary in their ability to convey feelings through movement, as well as the sheer exhilaration of movement and physicality. Mamootot will be performed by a cast of 9 dancers, with changing casts for different performances.
