Prima ballerina Irina Kolesnikova and the St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre will open the dance season at the Herzliya Performing Arts Center with two of the greatest classical ballets: Swan Lake and Don Quixote. Performances will take place from November 12 – 21, 2018, opening in Herzliya, with additional performances in Jerusalem, Beer Sheva, Ashdod, and Haifa.
Swan Lake features some of the most beautiful ballet music of all time by Tchaikovsky, with choreography by Marius Petipas and Lev Ivanov, as well as a psychological thriller of a fairy tale. Don Quixote is inspired by Cervantes’ novel, with music by Ludwig Minkus. The original choreography by Marius Petipas was revived by Alexander Gorski in 1902.
Founded in 1994 by Konstantin Tachkin, the St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre tours extensively, and travels with its own orchestra conducted by Alexander Kantorov. The dancers are primarily culled from the Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg. Principal dancers include: Irina Kolesnikova, Anna Podlesnaya,Dmitri Akulinin, Andrei Stelmakhov, Olga Ovchinnikova and Oleg Harutkin.
Irina Kolesnikova studied at the Vaganova Ballet Academy. Graduating at age 18, she joined the St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre as a soloist, and within two years was promoted to principal dancer. At age 21 she had become the company’s Prima Ballerina. She has performed in the greatest roles in classical ballet, including: Clara in The Nutcracker, Princess Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, Kitri in Don Quixote, Nikiya in La Bayadère, and Giselle. Yet she is particularly known for her interpretation of Odile/Odette in Swan Lake.
