The 4th Yafa Festival of Contemporary Arabic Culture will take place from July 17 – 20, 2019. The festival will present original productions and premieres of theatre, music, and dance performances.
Premieres at the festival include:
An adaptation by Amer Hlehel, to a work by Salman Natour (1949 – 2016), a staged reading performed by Yussef Abu Warda. Through the life story of an individual, the play reflects the Palestinian experience.
Ilan Ronen will direct an adaptation of David Grossman’s The Yellow Wind. Performers: Menashe Noy, Raida Adon, Murad Hassan and Gassan Abas.
A reading of the play The Rape (1989), by Syrian playwright Saadallah Wannous (1941 – 1997).
The Last Refugee – The Community Theatre of Sudanese Workers presents a comedy of errors, written by Yasser Abdullah, a refugee from Darfur, telling the tale of a refugee looking for work in Tel Aviv.
A musical performance by Amal Murkus and her son Firas, with songs that he composed as well as songs she sang to him when he was a baby.
Opening night events on July 17th will include a performance by System Ali – a unique and creative multi-lingual/multi-cultural hip hop ensemble of talented musicians who have been working together for over a decade, composing in Hebrew, Arabic, Russian, English, Yiddish and Amharic. Their live performances are full of exuberant energy, and clever, thought-provoking lyrics; inspiring and exhilarating.
The festival is the flagship project of the Arab-Hebrew Theatre and the Al-Saraya Theatre, and will take place in the theatre venue they have shared for the past twenty years, the Jaffa Theatre (10 Tayelet Mifratz Shlomo, Old City of Jaffa).
