What’s your favorite movie scene? It’s the kind of question that can lead to hours of conversation – and the opening question for the annual conference of the Sam Spiegel Film and Television School that will take place on October 21 at the Jerusalem Cinematheque.

40 key players on the Israeli cultural scene will each have their 15 minutes onstage to talk about their favorite scene for a film talk marathon from 10:00 to 22:00 that is free and open to the public.

Special guest Italian film editor Roberto Perpignani will be joining the others onstage to discuss his favorite scene, and what makes it memorable in his eyes. Perpignani, one of the most influential editors in European film, has edited close to 100 films. He has worked with Orson Welles, Bernardo Bertolucci (Before the Revolution 1964, Last Tango in Paris 1972) and edited seven films for the Taviani brothers, including Padre Padrone (1977) and Kaos (1984). Perpignani will also conduct a three day master class on editing strategies for students of the Sam Speigel School.

Some of the speakers and their film choices:
Nachman Ingber – Kes/Ken Loach, Mohammad Bakhri – The Band’s Visit/Eran Koliran, Dori Ben Zeev – Good Morning Vietnam/Barry Levinson, Doron Tsabari – Metzitzim/Uri Zohar, Professor Yaara Bar On – Kill Bill/Quentin Tarantino, Uri Klein – Laura/Otto Preminger, Dover Kosashvili – The Godfather/Francis Ford Coppola…and many, many more.

Renen Schorr, Director of Sam Spiegel, said in a press release: “This year the school will place an emphasis on those elements that make a movie unforgettable. It is important that future film makers remember that their role is to aspire to create memorable scenes that will affect the viewer. It is a conference of inspiration, passion for film making, a one-time event.”

The conference is sponsored by the Caesarea Foundation, the Jerusalem Foundation, the Ostrovsky Fund and the Rich Fund, and  in cooperation with the Jerusalem Cinematheque.
